Business as usual: an opinion-based report from IET Venues

From 29 July to 09 August 2012, travel between areas of London will no doubt be difficult as the world’s biggest sporting event comes to town. Just how will this affect normal commuters? This opinion-based report from IET Venues analyses the predicted disruption that will occur on London’s roads and rail, resulting in significant delays to the working day of the average commuter and discusses what solutions are being proposed to alleviate this situation. Some key findings include:

  • For the average rail commuter, working 8.5 hours a day, from 9-5 will experience delays of up to 30 minutes on some of the most central tube stops. Affecting journeys to and from work, rail commuters can expect to spend a total of almost three working days during the peak of this period, waiting for a train.
  • For those choosing to travel in and out of London on the roads during this time, expected delays on some of the major routes will extend a normal working week for these commuters by up to 20 hours in order to account for the extra time needed to travel during the morning and evening peak times.

Some top tips to avoid the chaos:

Businesses need to consider implementing the necessary arrangements to ensure essential journeys take place and that staff, customers and visitors avoid congested routes and continue business as usual.

Many are investing in video conferencing communications to avoid the need to travel yet boosting productivity through increased collaboration during the busiest periods this summer. IET Venues too has invested in its new video conferencing facilities, which combined with its social media facilities and live events capabilities, aim to provide businesses and event planners with the option to avoid unnecessary disruption due to travel delays during this period.
