The IET Innovation Awards were founded in 2005 and recognise and reward the best new innovations in engineering, science and technology.

These annual awards are open to all innovators, and industrial companies of all sizes, academic departments and enterprising individuals have won over the years. There are 15 categories, covering the breadth of the IET’s activities, and each category is independently peer-reviewed by a panel of experts in that field.

The object on display, made by Desolenator, won the Start-up and Sustainability Innovation Awards in 2015.

Transforming sunshine into drinking water

It’s estimated that 850m people live without proper access to clean water. Desolenator’s device is an affordable method of sustainable water purification and desalination, using only solar energy to purify water from any source by removing 99.99% of contaminants.

Its heat intensive solar panels are fitted with double glazing and insulated with foam to capture sunlight. Contaminated water is poured over the solar collector and heats to 90°C.

The water vapour produced is then captured in a small boiler vessel, constantly producing vapour, then heat exchanged over the PV panels and condenses into distilled water.
