Portable music

For consumer audio streaming or storage a very common portable digital music file format is the MP3 format.

MP3 is the common name for MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 Audio Layer III. Devices which use the MP3 format are known as MP3 players.

MP3 was designed by the Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG) as part of its MPEG-1 standard and later extended in the MPEG-2 standard.

MPEG-1 Audio (MPEG-1 Part 3) was published as a standard in 1993 and MPEG-2 Audio (MPEG-2 Part 3) was published as a standard in 1995.
