Shipping

Shipping, also known as freight transport, is the physical process of transporting commodities and merchandise goods and cargo.

The term shipping originally referred to transport by sea, but its usage has now extended to refer to transport by land or air as well.

This is a model of an AP Moller- Maersk Group container ship. Containerisation is a system of freight transport using intermodal containers (shipping containers) made of weathering steel.

The containers have standardised dimensions and can be loaded, stacked, transported efficiently over long distances and transferred between modes of transportation without being opened.

The handling system which is completely mechanised is done with cranes and special forklift trucks. This system developed after World War II, dramatically reduced transport costs and supported a boom in international trade.

It did away with the need for most manual sorting and the need for warehousing.
