Brake calipers are essential to the modern car's ability to stop. Arguably, they are one of the most important automobile brake parts. In a disc-braking system, the car wheel is attached to a metal disc, or rotor, that spins with the wheel.
The job of the caliper is to slow the wheel when required, by creating friction with the disc, or rotor. The brake caliper fits over the disc, or rotor like a clamp. Inside each= caliper is a pair of metal plates bonded with friction material, called brake pads.
When the brake is applied, brake fluid from the master cylinder creates hydraulic pressure on one or more pistons inside the brake caliper, forcing the pads against the rotor. The friction-bonded brake pads serve to slow the rotor down or bring it to a halt.
