Medical imaging

Medical imaging seeks to reveal internal structures hidden by the skin and bones, as well as to diagnose and treat disease. Medical imaging also establishes a database of normal anatomy and physiology to make it possible to identify abnormalities.

Although imaging of removed organs and tissues can be performed for medical reasons, such procedures are usually considered part of pathology instead of medical imaging.

Paediatric imaging presents specific challenges such as the sound of the scanner and the ability of small children to stay still for the time needed to perform an MRI scan.

It is extremely important to create an anxiety-free environment during imaging procedures and sedation or general anaesthesia is often required to prevent motion artifacts in young children.

Specialists provide therapeutic play for children of all ages, to help provide distractions during procedures, by using a model MRI device, such as the one displayed here or with the use of an MRI Scan app which allows adults and children to experience a 360 degree virtual scan.
