Oil production
The oil and gas industry is usually divided into three major sectors: upstream, midstream and downstream. The upstream oil sector is also more commonly known as the exploration and production (E&P) sector with crude oil production being the process of getting the oil out of the ground.
The earliest known oil wells were drilled in China in the 4th century and possibly earlier. They had depths of up to 240m and were drilled using bits attached to bamboo poles. The first oil wells in Europe were 30-50 metres deep and drilled at Bobrka in Poland in 1854.
Jerry can
This General Post Office jerry can was used to hold petrol. Petrol is a petroleum product derived from the processing of crude oil in oil= refineries (downstream sector).
A jerry can, also written as jerrycan, was originally a robust fuel container made form-pressed steel. It was designed in Germany in the 1930s for military use to hold 20 litres and was subsequently copied by the Allies during the Second World War.
The name of the jerry can refers to its German origins, Jerry being wartime slang for Germans.
