Wind energy
Wind energy or wind power is extracted from air flow using wind turbines or sails to produce mechanical or electrical power.
Wind power is very consistent from year to year but there are significant variations over shorter timescales. It is therefore used in conjunction with other electric power sources to give a reliable supply.
3D print of wind turbine
This is a 3D print of a wind turbine which is a device that converts kinetic energy from the wind into electrical power.
Wind turbines can rotate about either a horizontal or a vertical axis. Horizontal-axis wind turbines (HAWTs) have the main rotor shaft and electrical generator at the top of a tower and must be pointed into the wind.
Vertical-axis turbines (VAWTs) have the main rotor shaft arranged vertically and do not need to be pointed into the wind to be effective.
